Hello, my name is Sofia
Miss Sophie is my alter ego. My real name is Sofia Jansson and creating historical garments is my greatest passion! Some people have a specific, favorite era – I don’t. I make Viking age clothes as well as 1950’s reproductions and everything in between. Creating clothes from such a wide time range helps me to understand changes in both fashion and ideas about the female body in western european culture.
I have a Bachelor’s degree from studies in Culture, Society and Media production and have worked at both Skansen and Gamla Linköping open-air museum as a guide and interpreter/educator. At the moment I’m working as an antiquarian at Sörmlands museum, where Nyköping Castle is my field of responsibility. Even though making historical clothes is ”just a hobby” I can use my knowledge of dressing in the past almost everyday at work.
Hand sewing historical garments doesn’t only bring you insights about life several hundred years ago, it also makes you reflection upon our own lives today. How is it possible to buy new clothes for almost nothing, and who has to pay the real price? In the future I dream of making my historical garments from fabrics that are not only of the right quality, but also produced with the environment and the workers at heart.
Let me show you some of my work
